New from Microsoft Live Labs: Volta
Author: admin
Microsoft might net be as active recently as Google with developping various online tools and software utilities, but it definitely does show some progress. So, what do we have here?
Microsoft’s Volta technology is a developer toolset that enables you to build multi-tier web applications by applying familiar techniques and patterns. Developers prototype the application first as an entirely client application; afterwards the compiler takes care of the client code, server code, and boilerplate code that ties the two tiers, handling such functions as communication, serialization, and security.
How to get started?
- Download and install Volta.
- Follow the Getting Started guide to build your first application.
- See the developer guidance for more detailed examples and patterns.
- Tier-split until your heart is content. That’s all.
The Next Website Ranking System is Here
Author: admin
So, tadaaa… here it is: IZEARanks.com. We all have been waiting for a better ranking system after Google PageRank failed or rather penalized many webmasters and Alexa has proven to be easily gamed and manipulated. IZEA Ranks is a tool that ranks bloggers based on actual traffic and hits influence, which is measures on a daily basis and is relative to other blogs’ traffic. Just like IQ test, it measures your blog’s ability and influence together with comparing it to others and providing your overall rank standings.
In order to install the IZEARanks tools on your blog you need to go to IZEARanks.com to get started. Sign up is free, of course. After you have your account activated, you will be able to add a piece of javascript to your blog’s source code, which will collect and report a rank based on actual traffic and hits. Bloggers will have a choice between displaying page views + visitors or just your RealRank. Needless to add that it’s only good for those who have access to their template’s source code, as many bloggers who use free hosts that prevent bloggers from editing the template will not be able to measure their RealRank. Every website nowadays has some polls, it’s helpful for holding contests, gathering data from your visitors about their opinions and getting instant and easy feedback. These opinion polls are becoming truly popular but do you know where to get them? Get started with easy-poll.com.

This is by far the best polls tool I came across recently, because the polls’ layout is customizable (you can even choose colors and button style, and unlike some similar websites in this niche, they do not place ads on their website nor embed any hidden advertisement on the pages where their polls are posted. Simple awesome tool.
Online Tools for Pies

Web 2.0 is all about neat visualization, it’s about bringing everything in the best possible way under users noses, hence the big icons, pie charts, emotions, huge buttons. Nowadays, the online surfer can’t seem to find 20*20 RSS button anymore, so RSS feed buttons grew as big as 200*200 pixels and larger, and I ask myself, when will this “web 2.0 visualization”style come to an end, we are not kids and we can pretty much find icons and buttons without then taking up half of our screens.
But, now it’s web 2.0 era, and if you want to use pie charts to show your readers your traffic, income, or any other divided segments, here are 3 tools you can use:
Good for quick, simple charts. Provides links for you to embed it in yoru blog or website.
Geek247 -
This lets you create a pie chart on the fly, or you can download the PHP script to run on your own web site.
The National Center for Education Statistics has a very robust chart generator that can do bar, X-Y, Pie and more. The steps are a bit lengthy, but when done, you get multiple choice for download, or the option to print. Very nice with a lovely finalized product. This one gets the highest recommendation.
Spice Up Your iGoogle Page
Author: admin

After the long time we had to bear with the cute iGoogle themes that were either created by kids or, obviously, FOR kids, Google decided to make a few more themes for adults with their clothes on. Now you can browse the themes directory (here) for somewhat more impressive themes.
Currently there are 18 themes available, some of the themes were not created by Google, but I am sure that ones G-fans will get their hands on the documentatuibs, we will get to see a flood of them. I chose “Holiday Village” for my home page, but it’s a shame such a sweet Xmas theme was released after Xmas itself. I am looking forward to the Valentine’s day themes!
Software for selling your little home
Author: admin
I tend to think that today, there is software for managing practically everything online, and soon probably it will reach us offline as well. Even online property management software has already been invented and widely used by realtors and companies that deal with selling and buying property, assisting their clients online, which saves times to both realtors and customers. If you are working in this sphere or want to hear more details about this piece of software, you might want to consider Buildium, which is — according to them — the best online property management software provider for landlords, professional property managers, self-managed condos and homeowner associations.
So… Anyone who wants to sell his little house and manage the sale through software online, is welcome to give it a try.
Hosted shopping cart
Author: admin
Shopping online is nice, but when it comes to opening our own online eCommerce website, we come to realize how important it is to find the right platform for our virtual shop and find the best possible shopping cart. Such eCommerce software has to be secure, easily customizable, reasonably priced and ideally offer a free trial so you could get to see and feel how is it like running this particular shopping cart, is it easy to use and runs smooth? A few of my friends opened an online shop recently and both of them purchased Ashop light version for $39 a month. At first I thought it’s an overpriced solution and that maybe this is not the best value they could get for their money, however, when I got to see the features of Ashop, I realized it’s in fact a rather cheap that gives excellent value for every dollar.
Ashop allows you to accept credit card payments, requires no installation, offers 10-days free trial and provides free support and upgrades. Seems to me like a very good solution for merchants to sell online.
Panda’s Tiny Tool: Instant Viruses NanoScan
Author: admin
This is a great online virus scan, a beta version available from Panda’s heads. It will require a tiny download, following which the scan is ultra fast (took about 80 seconds to scan my 30GB harddrive. How effective it is, I cannot really tell because at the time of the scan my computer was clean, and there was nothing to look for. If you use personalized homepages like NetVibes, iGoogle or PageFlakes you’ll be able to use NanoScan to scan your PC for viruses, spyware and Trojans right from your homepage. Main advantage over other scanner is without the light application (approximately 400k) and fast scan engine, unlike Trend Macro’s HouseCall that takes practically forever.
