There’s a danger I could become a real fan of Magic: The Gathering after my induction last week! I’ve already bought my first set and the next thing I know I’m being given advice about how to look after those precious cards. Though from what I’ve seen so far (unlike some other TCGs) the Magic crowd are more interested in the playing part that the collecting part.
Anyway, here’s a mini-guide I’ve put together based on my conversations with various players about how to keep your cards safe. With options from basic storage sleeves to more advanced solutions. Whether your trading card journey is in its infancy (like mine!), or you are a seasoned collector, read on to see how you should be caring for your cards.
Ways to protect your cards
Trading cards are vulnerable when it comes to moisture, wear as a result of play, UV light and, of course, accidental damage.
Sleeves
Whether you are handling a Reign of Jafar card from Disney’s Lorcana or a foil Cavern of Souls from MTG, the first step you should be considering is sleeving.
Card sleeves are a very worthwhile investment that can be very effective in protecting your trading cards. They are thin plastic protectors that shield your cards from fingerprints and scratches.
For your more valuable cards it can be worth considering double-sleeving, using a tight inner sleeve and a standard outer sleeve. This is a method popular with both collectors and competitive players alike.
Deck boxes and binders
As a more long-term storage option it is a good idea to invest in deck boxes and binders. There are plenty of different options out there and these include a number of themed binders for Lorcana and Commander deck boxes for Magic. It is important to look for binders that have acid-free, PVC-free pages. This will help to prevent chemical damage to your cards. In order to reduce handling, consider organising your collection by set, rarity, or format as this will make it easier to find what you are looking for.
Best storage conditions
Humidity and temperature control can often be overlooked, but are critical. If you store cards in damp or fluctuating environments, they may warp or stick together. Instead, store your collection in a cool, dry place away ensuring they are not in direct sunlight. UV exposure can fade the art and text on your cards, especially if they are older or foil cards. If you are displaying cards, then use UV-protective sleeves or frames.
When transporting cards to events such as Magic tournaments, remember to use rigid deck boxes or travel cases. These can help prevent bending and jostling during transit. For trades, don’t forget to bring extra sleeves and also a clean surface to inspect cards. Cards should always be handled by the edges to avoid smudging or bending.
Card cleaning and maintenance
Cleaning and maintenance of trading cards should be minimal. Do not use water or cleaning agents. If there is dust or debris on a card gently wipe it with a microfiber cloth. If cards that have been accidentally exposed to moisture, air-dry them immediately and don’t stack.
Grading and cataloguing cards is key for collectors. You can use platforms like Deckbox or MTGGoldfish to track card values and conditions.
Taking care of your trading cards is a combination of protection, organisation and being aware of the environment. Whether you are a casual player or a serious collector, investing in the correct care will help keep your cards in the best condition possible.
