How to raise and save money when changing your home décor

Carrying out improvements on your property can quickly become expensive if you are not careful to keep an eye on your spending. However, there are a number of ways in which you can change the décor of your home without spending over the odds. In this blog post we will take a look at some of the ways in which you can raise and save money when it comes to changing your home decor. 

Check out online forums

Take a look on local Facebook pages and your local free-cycle site. People are often giving things away that they no longer need. Its easier to give them away that try and take them to the tip and this means that you pick things up for free or for a nominal cost. Don’t expect perfect but with a little bit of work or elbow grease you can correct the wonky leg on a coffee table or clean up a rug that somebody else no longer wants. This is a great way of recycling, repurposing and doing your bit for the environment.

Remember that you should never give your bank account details to anyone online. If you are travelling to collect something take someone with you. Furthermore, if you are paying make sure you see the item before you hand over the cash. 

Buy second hand

Homewares and furniture can often be found in dedicated charity shops that specialise in selling these items at very reasonable prices. These are often good quality items that have been donated as a result of a house clearance.

Sell old items you don’t want

A good way of raising money for new home décor items is to sell some of your old items to help fund the purchase. These might be old lamps or pictures, for example. Whatever it is, rather than letting it gather dust think about selling it. If you have quite a bit to sell, then you may want to consider going to a car boot sale. Should you only have one or two items to sell, then your local selling page or Facebook marketplace can be a good place to make a little money. If you simply want to replace a bookcase in your home with a new one, then it makes sense that at some point you would want to get rid of the old one, so make it work for you. 

Hacking

One popular way in which you can change your home décor for next to nothing is to revamp something that you already have. This can include bringing an old colour scheme up to date. There is plenty of information out there about how to upcycle items in your home and give them a new lease of life. This may be a bit of a learning curve, and it will certainly require some time and patience on your part. However, with a little careful planning you could have some really unique items in your home. 

Borrow don’t buy

If the jobs that you need to do require the use of expensive tools, and you only need them for one job then buying is not a very practical solution. Check with friends and family. You can see if someone has the tools you need and will lend them to you in order to complete the tasks.
