Ikea’s solid wood Hemnes range is NOT what most people expect when they think of Ikea furniture. A cut above your average melamine flat-pack offerings, Hemnes is, as Ikea so eloquently put it, ‘a new look with an heirloom feel’. Like the much-missed Leksvik line, Hemnes is predominantly solid wood. It comes in a beautiful and traditional style for a classic bedroom which will stand the test of time. Everything offers practicality and longevity. And, being mainly solid wood, this range will actually improve with age.
Beds
The bed frame – available in fresh white or a period feel black brown and with single or double options – is entirely wood with a 1940s feel and look. The high ends give a luxury appearance especially when combined with hotel quality bed linen. This is at odds with the more than reasonable price. Also, the range includes storage drawers which not only fit perfectly, but look just as good as the bed. They’re ideal for storing extra bedding. The day bed is equally stunning and simply perfect for my guest room. However, it could be used in a child’s bedroom. Available in a creamy white or an on-trend pale, dove grey, it’s incredibly versatile. As well as storage drawers, there’s an additional pull-out mattress, making it the ultimate bed for sleepovers or guests. Ikea promise ‘four functions – sofa, single bed, double bed and storage solution’.
What else is in the range?
Your room can be given a complete makeover with the entire Hemnes range. There’s a pretty bedside table – or a more practical two-drawer chest – and several sizes of chests of drawers. The three-drawer chest offers satisfyingly deep drawers (the bottom drawer is extra deep). Alternatively, the six-draw chest features two handy little drawers at the top – perfect for jewellery. A bigger option is the eight-drawer chest of drawers in a really striking red-brown stain. Two deep bottom drawers, two standard and four smaller offer all the storage you could possibly need. A safety fitting is included with all Hemnes chests of drawers where appropriate.
The wardrobe is also solid wood and is as attractive as everything else in the range. It features sliding doors to save space in the bedroom. It can be truly customised with various options for inside, too. This could provide storage for clothes, shoes, ties, scarves – you name it!
No bedroom is complete without a mirror and a dressing table. The Hemnes mirror and dressing table will finish the room off beautifully – they certainly do for mine. The same classic styling is present, beautiful and yet simple, with no unnecessary frills and fripperies. Yet, they all come with the same sturdy wooden construction. The dressing table features exquisite curved legs, a Princess-worthy oval mirror, two small drawers for jewellery or make up and a larger, secret drawer underneath. There’s also an easy to clean glass top with safety film provided – so it’ll be as perfect for a child’s room as an adult’s.
Ikea quality is beyond doubt and there’s no long wait for delivery – simply pop to your local stores and you can bring home your new bedroom today. Don’t be afraid of the self-assembly aspect, either. Easy peasy. Honest! It only took me an hour or so and I had a fantastic new bedroom suite that I now absolutely love.
