Tom Dixon design (found at John Lewis) features on trend, contemporary pieces with an art deco influence. His lighting range is full of distinctive and unusual silhouettes, metals (copper, silver and gold) and geometric shapes. Dixon himself is part of the radical Swedish design movement. Their philosophy is to infuse unique, quirky designs into everyday life. The result are well-designed pieces that look great but serve a functional purpose, much like the Bauhaus movement.
The lighting range has ceiling pendants, floor lamps, and table lamps that ooze glamour and exclusivity. His most on trend pieces feature a copper finish and some copper-ombré touches. As a huge fan of copper in the home, I’ve scoured John Lewis and amassed a decent collection that people really seem to notice when they come round to visit.
Tom Dixon ‘Melt’ Ceiling Pendant
The ‘Melt’ Ceiling Pendant looks just as though it is melting, with its subtle out of shape smooth finish and glossy texture (in copper, gold or silver). The pendant actually looks as though its slowly melting away under the heat, making for a very unusual room feature. Even more so unusual is when you turn the light on – the luminous effect of the copper finished pendant looks just like it has come out of a volcanic eruption. This fitting projects warmth and glamour.
The pendant length is adjustable from 70cm to 300cm and the dimensions of the pendant are H300 x W50 x D50cm making this a noticeable feature in even the biggest of spaces. The energy rating is A++ to E giving this light fitting the potential to be extremely energy efficient. Made from polycarbonate, this fitting is very strong and durable – so ideal if you’re not keen on delicate, emininetly breakable fittings.
While this pendant is not cheap at £600, for a timeless, unusual feature this is a worthwhile investment – I certainly get comments on mine!
Tom Dixon Bell Table Lamp
Who doesn’t love a stylish table lamp? This full copper table lamp is a gorgeous accent for most trendy living rooms. This dome shaped piece with a silky copper (or silver) plated pressed steel finish is a dream accent piece – catching the eye but not overwhelming the room.
The lamp measures 44cm high and 28cm wide, making it a nice chunky, noticeable addition to a side table or sideboard. With a cord length of 3 metres, you can place the lamp anywhere in a room and with an energy rating of A++ to D this lamp is very energy efficient. The lamp gives off a subtle yet effective projection of light, making it great for a accent light while you’re relaxing of a evening.
Ok, so the lamp isn’t a steal at £420.00 but like all Tom Dixon products you are investing in a timely piece of carefully engineered lighting.
Tom Dixon designs also offer other pieces including chairs and a fruit bowl, so if you’re not looking for lighting but love the look, the range is well worth exploring. Or you could combine your new lighting with other glamorous, good quality pieces from his contemporary range – I know I will be doing.
